[Nose Surgery] Concept of Rhinoplasty 5 ( Ideal shape of Nose )

The topic for this time is "Ideal shape of a nose".




These pictures show an ideal proportion of a nose.


Nose, being situated in the center of the face, plays decisive role in determining the facial impression.
Those with flat nose in general appears to have broad face with reduced sense of 3-Dimentionality while those with sharp nose causes one's attention to be focused to the center of the face, thereby achieving visual effect of making the face appear relatively smaller.


Accordingly, since the effect of the nose to the surrounding areas is substantial, more natural and confidential sharp nose can be achieved only when the shape of the tip of the nose as well as the height and length of the nose harmonize with the forehead, eyes, lips and frontal chin rather than simply elevation the height of the nose.



Columella is the nasal pillar section located between the nostrils, and it is ideal for the columella to be exposed approximately 1~2mm more than the lower portion of the nasal ala when viewed from the lateral aspect.
If the columella section appears to be tucked in further in accordance with the location of columella and nasal ala or if columella appears to be long because it is situated too fac below, then surgery of this area should be considered.


In order to produce ideal shape of the tip of the nose, columella and columella labrum angle together, and in the case of involuted columella with the columella situated further in, improvement is performed  mainly with nasal septum cartilage extension surgery or insertion of ear cartilage.


In case of sagging columella downward, establish beautiful relationship between columella and nasal ala from the lateral aspect through the method of naroowing or excision of internal angle of nasal ala cartilage or reducing the excessively stretched membraneous nasal septum in accordance with the anatomical causes.
